No contestant thus far has finished with a 5-star average rating, though Kelly Clarkson,Latoya London, and Melinda Doolittle all came close. If you take away London's and Doolittle's lowest-rated performance, they'd both have turned the trick. Which makes it all the more ironic that it was the same song that did them both in.
Who's #4? Put it this way. Someday in the hopefully-distant future, when Paula Abdul shuffles off this mortal coil, she will arrive at the pearly gates where St. Peter will be waiting. (Yes, we're aware that Paula is Jewish, but we mean no disrespect; it's just the standard metaphor for heaven. Work with us here.) St. Peter will glance over his pedestal, shake his head sadly, and pose to her the one question she dreads more than any other: "What on earth were you thinking when you chose Leah LaBelle over Suzy Vulaca?" True, for all we know, if Vulaca had made the Top 12 in AI3, she might've sung "Muskrat Love" right out of the gate and fallen so far on this list you'd have to page all day to find her. As it is, her rating will keep her near the top of the rankings for, ahem, all eternity.
After Clarkson, you have to go a fair ways down the list before you come to the next season winner, and it probably comes as a surprise that it's Fantasia Barrino. Whether you loved her or hated her (and even the WNTS.com staff is deadlocked on that subject), one must give Barrino her due: from beginning to end, she turned in a string of solid performances. Equally surprising is that, among the winners' circle, Carrie Underwood brings up the rear, owing to a few humdrum performances towards the end of her run.
Lastly, only three finalists so far has completed their Idol runs with a dreaded 1-star average. Two were from Season One and one from Season Six. We don't think it'll take you too many guesses on that last one.
